Jain Organization of Youth (JOY)
JOY was founded in 1993 as the youth wing of the Jain Society of Greater
Detroit. The intent was to empower the youth of our community by
providing them with a platform that they could use to spread and
enhance awareness of Jain religion and to promote social and community
service. It was also conceived as a support system for our youth
through the sometimes difficult teenage years, where they could share
their experiences and concerns with each other.
Since
its founding JOY has matured into an organization with vitality
and purpose. It is now an integral part of Jain community and makes
meaningful contributions to its parent organization through its
periodic events. These events broadly fall into three categories
– religious, social and community service.
Religious
events include the Navkar Jaap on Thanksgiving Day, Snatra
Puja and helping the society during Paryushan and other important
occasions. JOY members have been very successful in spreading awareness
of Jain principles such as non-violence, so relevant in these times,
among their peers in schools and communities.
Social
events are organized to encourage bonding and friendship among
our youth. These include a winter camp, lock-in, and general body
meetings. During the winter camp - a much anticipated event on the JOY
calendar - members travel away for a weekend and enjoy outdoor
activities as well as mediated religious and social discussions.
Community
service events teach the ideals of volunteering and social
responsibility. Some of the events undertaken recently include
Christmas in Action and World Medical Relief. Through these events, our
youth have made a positive contribution that has been much appreciated
by the recipients.
We
would like to thank all parents, EC and BOT members for their
support in the past. Because of their support, JOY is now a vibrant and
purposeful organization that has much to offer. If you have children
who are or will soon be 13, please encourage them to become members.
Membership forms are available in the temple office.
